This project was part of the QRiocity project for the state of design, 2010. By creating a web of connections through the city, internet, small installations and other references the aim of the project was to formulate a reading of the city as a series of codes that could be navigated in a non linear manner.

Replicator draws from the idea of a self replicating machine - a machine that is capable of producing a version of itself using materials taken from its environment.

The notion of replication allows for differentiation, re-scaling and reconfiguration of the components of the University of Canberra campus in a way that takes in to account the dynamic qualities of the Australian landscape and the nature of a university to draw on and create new trajectories of knowledge.

Replicator is a system that takes cues from the adjacent environment and reconfigures them through the materiality of the landscape. The ‘campus as a laboratory’ uses the landscape as a ground for experimentation, research, learning and collaboration with community

Through the actions of distribution and re-distribution the system negotiates the qualities of the larger context with those of the campus and provides a framework for growth and transformation.

Plastic Web is an installation that considers the aesthetic potentials of waste through the collection and reuse of plastic bags creating a three dimensional web. Accumulating over time the web attaches and spreads across the entry space, collecting elements and incorporating mini landscapes. Plastic web attempts to redefine the relationship between waste and nature…

Plastic Web was supported by RMIT University

The North Pacific gyre currently holds 100 million tonnes of refuse that is expected to double in size over the next decade. What is described as ‘the plastic soup’ has been trapped by ocean currents and estimates on size range from 700,000km2 to more than 15,000,000km2.

We wanted to explore the dynamic relationships between landscape, inhabitation, infrastructure, trade, tourism and waste. We aimed to reformulate a city as a series of choreographed encounters in the plastic soup.

Realising we would have to create ‘living’ entities to engage with this dynamic, we created species and ‘released’ them into the environment. The species take on roles of recyclers, consumers and producers. On their journey some species feed off plastic from the ‘soup’ and become part of the farming and recycling infrastructure. Others attract and feed plankton, becoming a carbon sink and food source for marine life. Together, the species intervene in and change the cycles of shipping, trade, tourism, fishing, and become spaces for inhabitation.

The aim of this project was to understand the temporal organisation of the landscape rather than its constituent parts. Using Marey’s studies of movement as a starting point we constructed a project that investigated time through three studies of the freeway landscape in America. Three main threads were identified to be thickness, assembly and connection.

This is the ‘reality’ of the city. These events, real, imagined, structural and physical are embedded in the fabric of the city. This fabric is immune to the seemingly linear flow of time. There is no before, after or now, but a continuous transformation of the city creating fissures through time and space.

Transformative Surface was a device that through its structure, materiality and lighting captures change in the landscape. Rather than seeing surface as a two dimensional, infinitely thin layer or terrain, it is reconsidered as a means of continuously registering change in the landscape (in this case wind).

The information is mediated and transformed through the material qualities of the surface. As the surface was unable to embed the information, the transformation of the surface was captured through images, film and terrestrial scans.

It was a foggy night, in wintry Amsterdam. Riding through Vondelpark without bike lights, I could see some flashing lights, was it a Christmas tree? As I drew near I could see white and red bike lights strung high in a tree. Seeing others do the same, I stopped my bike, climbed up in the tree and retrieved a new set of lights for my bike. I rode through the next night, but by then they were all gone.

Fiets Treats was a temporary lighting installation as part of the ‘Pop-Up’ Festival in Amsterdam December 2008. A series of bicycle lights were placed in an iconic tree in Vondelpark along an intensely used bike path. The lights provided a mini event in the journey and the park and provoked interaction the tree itself.

Yarra Glen Grand Hotel Beer Garden is a series of leaning and folding walls. The walls negotiate change such as level, program, seasons and events. This allows for overlapping activities to occur simultaneously – a car park, outdoor dining area, smokers gallery, playground and outdoor cinema.

Through splicing, stitching, hybrid and pruning the original Walter Burley Griffin Plan, the landscape was remade to create an ‘event surface’ by manipulations of the drainage and topography of the park.
